Root canal treatment
Welcome to our dental practice's page dedicated to root canal treatment. We know that this type of treatment can raise questions and sometimes apprehension. That's why we've designed this page to inform you, reassure you, and explain in detail the procedure and benefits of this treatment.
What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is a dental procedure designed to save a severely damaged or infected tooth. It involves removing the dental pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth), which may be affected by deep decay, trauma, or infection. Once the pulp is removed, the root canals are cleaned, disinfected, and sealed to prevent recurrence.
When is it necessary?
Root canal treatment is often recommended in the following cases:
-
Deep decay: When decay reaches the dental pulp and causes inflammation or infection
-
Infection: If a bacterial infection has spread inside the tooth.
-
Trauma: After an impact or fracture that exposes the pulp
-
Persistent pain: In case of severe pain or prolonged hypersensitivity to hot and cold.
The steps of root canal treatment
Here is how a root canal treatment is performed in our office:
1. Diagnosis and preparation
We perform a thorough examination, accompanied by X-rays, to evaluate the condition of your tooth and confirm your need for root canal treatment. Local anesthesia is then administered to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure
2. Cleaning the root canals
We access the affected pulp by opening the tooth. The pulp is carefully removed, and the root canals are cleaned and disinfected to eliminate any traces of infection.
3. Canal closure
Once the root canals are perfectly clean, we fill them with a special material called gutta-percha to hermetically seal the inside of the tooth.
4. Final Restoration
To protect and strengthen the treated tooth, we usually place a crown or other type of durable restoration.
Frequently asked questions about root canal treatment
Is it painful?
How long does the treatment last?
Will the tooth be fragile after treatment?
Thanks to modern techniques and local anesthesia, root canal treatment is generally painless. Patients often feel relief after the procedure as the pain related to infection subsides.
The duration depends on the complexity of the case, but it generally requires between 1 and 2 sessions.
A proper restoration (such as a crown) is recommended to strengthen the treated tooth.
